W dniu premiery filmu „The Soviet Story” w Brukseli prokremlowska gazeta „Prawda” nazywa go „próbą przepisywania historii przez Europę”. Kremlowski historyk nawołuje by ukarać jego kolegów, którzy pomogli w robieniu filmu.
Pracujący dla Kremla historyk Aleksandr Djukow twierdzi w wywiadzie dla gazety, że archiwalne filmy dokumentalne, które wykorzystują łotewscy twórcy filmu, to między innymi „znany historykom falsyfikat pod nazwą „Generalne porozmienie o współpracy między NKWD i Gestapo z 11 listopada 1938 roku”. Według kremlowskiego historyka, dokument ten stworzyli kilka lat temu „radykalni rosyjscy nacjonaliści”.

Zdaniem Djukowa, rosyjscy historycy, którzy współuczestniczyli w tworzeniu filmu, muszą albo wyrzec się go, albo zostać zwolnieni i dostać zakaz wykonywania swojego zawodu. „Jeżeli ktoś chce uczestniczyć w antyrosyjskiej propagandzie - niech to robi nie na koszt państwa” - mówi wyraźnie rozdrażniony kremlowski historyk.

Z kolei zastępca dyrektora generalnego „Centrum politycznych technologii” Sergej Mihejew uważa, że film „The Soviet Story” to próba przepisywania historii przez kraje europejskie. „Przynajmniej w czasach drugiej wojny światowej rola ZSSR była jednoznacznie pozytywna. Gdyby nie ofiary, które złożył Związek Radziecki, Europa – podobnie jak USA - nie istniałyby w swojej obecnej formie” - twierdzi Mihejew.

Łotewscy twórcy filmu „The Soviet Story” stanowczo podkreślają, że nie chcą oskarżać spadkobierczyni ZSSR – Rosji, lecz uświadomić Europejczykom na Zachodzie prawdę historyczną i ogrom zbrodni sowieckiego reżimu. Film opowiada też o współpracy sowietów z Hitlerem, o tym jak ZSSR pomagał niemieckim nazistom w mordowaniu Żydów i zabijał własnych obywateli „na skalę przemysłową”.

The Soviet Story is a Latvian documentary from 2008. It is a controversial documentary, which has received a lot of criticism from the circles who protect the legacy of the Soviet empire. The errand of the documentary is to highlight a taboo in history and revel a casual link between the two major ideologies of the 20'Th century: Communism and Nazism/fascism. Until today, the established history never really questioned if the communist ideology in the Soviet Union committed crimes against humanity, but saw it as a victim of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. But what really happened before 1941? Before WW2 Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union cooperated on a large scale with the ultimate signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop agreement, which topped with the invasion of Poland and the Baltic countries in 1940. Could this corporation be fruitful for both parties because the two ideologies share many similar points of view? The documentary covers topics such as:
